Sample of Two Recent Studies

1. A pilot study comparing motivational interviewing and
an educational intervention in patients with
schizophrenia and alcohol use disorders.
Graeber, Moyers, et al. (2003)

Sample:
30 clients (1 female), mean age(43)
co-morbid Schizophrenia and alcohol use disorder,

Intervention
MI and Educational treatment (ET)

Design:
MI or ET over three sessions for 1 hour each session

Measure:
BAC, number of drinking days, abstinence rates: at 4, 8,
and 24 week follow-up

Results:
MI had statistically significantly higher abstinence
rates and reduction in drinking days versus ET group

2. Motivational interviewing with personalized feedback: A
brief intervention for motivating smokers with
schizophrenia to seek treatment for tobacco dependence.
Steinberg, Ziedonis, Krejci, & Brandon. (2003)

Sample:
78 individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective
disorder with tobacco dependence.

Intervention:
Experimental group: MI, Control group: psychoeducational
intervention on smoking or minimal-control intervention
(5 min.)

Design:
AB (before and after intervention)

Measure:
Face-to-face interviews (demographic info, antipsychotic
med type, GAF score, substance abuse history, and to
confirm diagnosis), Four measures of motivation (stages
of change algorithm, the Contemplation Ladder,
self-reported importance and self-efficacy, also info
regarding personal experience from participants).

Results:
One session of MI intervention was more effective than
either one session of psychoeducation or minimal-control
intervention.
